Rug sizing for a New York living room

Almost every rug returned to this showroom is returned for the same reason: it was bought one size too small.

Measure the furniture, not the floor

The rug is sized to the seating group, not to the room. Start by measuring the footprint of the sofa and chairs as they are arranged, then add a margin on each side.

A room measurement tells you the maximum. The furniture measurement tells you what will actually look right.

The front-legs rule

In a living room, the front legs of the sofa and every chair should sit on the rug. That single rule is what stops a rug looking like a mat that wandered in.

In practice it usually means going from a 5×7 to an 8×10, which is the jump most people hesitate over and then wish they had made sooner.

When 5×7 is right

A 5×7 works under a small two-seat arrangement, at the foot of a bed, or as a defined zone in an open-plan space where the furniture is not on it at all.

Used under a full three-piece group it floats, and the room reads as unfinished.

Runners

Runners want four to five inches of bare floor showing on each side. Wall to wall looks like carpet that was cut badly.

Length is more forgiving than width — a runner that stops short of the end of a hall is fine.

Doorways and delivery

An 8×10 rolled is bulkier than people expect. Check the turn at the top of the stairs and the width of the door before it arrives, not after.

This is the practical reason we mention dimensions on every listing.

Letting it flatten

A rolled rug has curled edges for a few days. Reverse-roll it for an hour, or weight the corners overnight, and it settles.

Do not judge the purchase in the first twenty-four hours.

Washable really does mean washable

A machine-washable rug changes what is possible in a flat with pets or small children. It also means the pile is usually shorter, which is a trade worth understanding before buying.

Deep shag is lovely and is not going in a washing machine.

Where this sits in the shop

High Style Deco groups its range into 6 sections, so it is usually quicker to start from the group than to scroll the whole shop. These are the ones with stock on the shelf right now:

If none of those is obviously right, the full shop lists everything on one page.

What it costs

Across the 20 items currently listed, prices run from $6.98 to $69.99, with the middle of the range around $32.90. That spread is worth knowing before you start comparing, because the cheapest and dearest options here are usually not the same kind of product at all.

Shipping is a flat $9.99 per order and free once the order reaches $79.00, which is set out in full on the Shipping Policy page.
