Acrylic mirrors: where they work and where glass is still better
Acrylic mirror sheets solved a real problem for renters and small spaces, but they are not a straight replacement for glass.
The advantages are practical
Acrylic is a fraction of the weight of glass, does not shatter, and can be fixed with adhesive. That combination is what makes it work on a rental wall or in a child's room.
It also ships without the risk that makes large glass mirrors awkward to buy online.
The trade-off is flatness
Thin acrylic flexes, and a flexed mirror distorts. Mounted on a genuinely flat surface with even adhesive it is fine; mounted over a textured wall it is not.
This is the single thing that determines whether you are pleased with the result.
Preparing the wall
Clean and dry, no dust, no polish. Press from the centre outward so air does not get trapped behind the sheet.
Trapped air is what causes the visible ripple people complain about.
Tiles versus sheets
Tiles let you cover an awkward area and tolerate a slightly uneven wall better, because each piece is small. A single large sheet gives a cleaner result on a flat wall.
Tiles also let you build a shape rather than a rectangle, which suits a stair wall.
Where glass still wins
Anywhere you need a true reflection for grooming, and anywhere the mirror is the feature rather than a light trick. Framed glass also reads as more permanent.
If it is going above a dressing table, buy glass.
Cleaning
Acrylic scratches. Use a soft cloth and a mild cleaner, never a paper towel or anything abrasive, and never a solvent.
A scratched acrylic mirror cannot be polished back the way glass can.
Removing them later
Adhesive strong enough to hold is strong enough to take paint with it. Fishing line worked behind the sheet lifts it more cleanly than pulling.
Worth knowing before you cover a whole wall in a flat you will hand back.
